This subject line has to involve the word Shiny!!!

Okay, so if I'd known Jewel Staite was playing a doctor on Stargate Atlantis I would have gotten around to watching it more frequently. But IMDB implies that at least one of the eps was in 2005, and I've seen all of the 2005 ones, so maybe I just forgot? No wait, I remember why I wasn't supposed to know about this. Right. Anyway, all of a sudden I'm willing to watch this show out of order, despite the pregnant major character and my hatred of...

...oh, and then there's Sam with the freakin' hair extensions of capitulation. *sigh* Goshdarn it Sam's not the same with long hair! At least she's hangin' with Zelenka; ooh, and she has more booty these days, how adorable! Okay, I might be convinced to trade that for the hair extensions.

Oh, and John is already bitching about how in this sort of situation the pregnant woman ALWAYS goes into labor. Either they'll kid about it and drop it, or it'll happen. I hope it's the former! I'll turn the TV off if you pull that shit, MARTIN DO YOU HEAR ME?!?

ANYWAY.

I haven't written an update since getting back from Texas. Basically, that's because I didn't want to come back from Texas. Some of it was being on vacation. Some of it was being among friends, doing goofy fun stuff. Some of it was feeling like I belonged, in multiple ways that were profound.

But on the bright side, I did survive 2 days of work and some important stuff, and today I took a sick day to sit on my ass and, well, process some stuff.

But hey! In lieu of a detailed vacation report, check out this SF0 task I did while I was in Texas! I'll have another one done soon, I think.

Now back to hiding in my living room with the computer and lots of yarn and food from my new slow cooker. And that, my friends, is shiny.

Parasol. You needs one.

Jewel had a guest spot as a Wraith a few years back. They recast her as the city doctor last season finale.

It's been a good season, but the Teyla plot has me worried too. It seemed like there were several years when they were avoiding canonizing any relationships in the show (lots of subtext for just about any pairing you can imagine, het or otherwise, but almost nothing on camera unless someone was mind controlled or whatnot). I'm going to be aggravated if we have to watch one or more painful break-ups, to say nothing of the cliche John was afraid of.

I like my shows with tons of subtext for lots of pairings. Besides, not putting it right out there in text is a Stargate tradition at this point!

Is the Teyla plot driven at all by an actor pregnancy or is it entirely fabricated? Cuz either way, I really really don't like pregnancy plots in general, and while I liked some of the discussions it raised in what I saw, overall, bleargh.

maybe we should trade jobs....

i had much the same reaction to being in Boston last weekend. you can have texas if you'll give me the northeast! (or heck, even an itsy bitsy part of it, as long as it is somewhat of a city...)

The problem is that I want Houston and Palacios, not Dallas. And I have Holyoke rather than Boston. And librarian salaries suck down there, even though their real estate is cheaper. *sigh*

Hey, I'd be happy to trade for Holyoke. To be back in MA without having to deal with Boston everyday would be perfect for me. I've never been a city girl.

Librarian salaries do suck down here, though...

You are even further from Houston and Palacios! Not to mention San Antonio, which is where PGJ lives now!

Also, I can sorta fake my way through [livejournal.com profile] jab2's field for brief periods, but I really cannot fake it with yours even though I have more training in that area.

Alright, then, I'll settle for you just getting me one up there and staying put yourself. :)

Re: faking, You'd be surprised at what the really determined person can fake. It's all about the confidence.

[There are some spoilers in here, though really just tone and character interaction ones, so if you care about that and you haven't seen the whole season, feel free to delete it unread.]

Frankly, they've been handling the pregnancy plotline better than I expected so far, though that's in part because I expected them to handle it badly.

And I like the way they're playing Sam on Atlantis! She's basically the same old Sam, except she's playing the "expedition leader" role instead of the "expedition genius" role, which is sort of inevitable, since the Atlantis expedition genius role was already cast (actually, McKay is fandom's darling, so it's been interesting watching all the Atlantis people throw up their hackles at Sam and then slowly relax...) But I'm frankly happy that they finally cast her in a genuine leadership role, and they've done a decent job of balancing being true to her character and integrating her into the Atlantis milieu. Her character seems comfortable with leadership now, rather than nervous about it as they played her on SG1, which I like. And her history of being in the genius role I think allows her character to have interesting character interactions with McKay, who was a character that the Wier character just never had much to say to (and I'm quite happy that they've gone down that road instead of framing their interactions in terms of the SG1 Sam/McKay sexualized rivalry thread, which was funny to me in the context of SG1 and McKay as a guest star, but which would be horrible in terms of a relationship between two main characters).

I got about 3/4 of the way through the episode before realizing that Sam was taking the expedition leader role and I hadn't seen Weir at ALL. It surprised me, and I was REALLY pleased with it. She looks _good_ as a civilian with ex-military background! It's not so obvious when she TAKES CHARGE! And yet she's clearly facilitating all of it! Very, VERY snazzy. Sorta the leadership we always wanted to see from Sam....

(Am I correct in presuming she's now ex-mil, even though they're still calling her by her rank?)

[identity profile] grnarmadillo.livejournal.com 2008-01-28 12:21 am (UTC)(link)
Carter is still US Military. The episode in which she becomes the expedition leader fails to offer much in the way of explanation as to why the IOC, which traditionally distrusts the US military, didn't have a problem with this. It also failed to offer any explanation as to why she isn't needed back on Earth with SG-1 to help fight Inara and/or the Ori. (Then again, I'm not sure when the forthcoming DVD is set relative to the current season of Atlantis, maybe it's beforehand and Carter's free to run around Pegasus because they already won that battle.) Said episode also has other flaws which I won't get into now because you haven't seen it yet. I would be significantly less happy about this, but the show has been very good since, so I've decided to just accept that the status quo happened without dwelling on the how. :)

P.S. Google says the actress who plays Teyla actually is pregnant in real life, so I guess they wrote it into the show after the fact.

Huh. Then I can see political reasons for her to have her hair down and be out of uniform. Which kinda makes those things fit. I think some of that they owed to Tapping after all those years of her bitching about Sam's Black Widow reputation. She was sick of Sam's short hairstyles, for one thing.
