This morning:

1. We have no water at the library. Nobody knows why.
2. Matthew is reading Watchmen at the desk and we ended up explaining to Jody why Watchmen is important.
3. Bruce and I had a lengthy discussion of army surplus bags as purses, why the claymore bags are too flimsy to be used that way, and why you should go for a Mark VI or Mark VII gas mask bag. (Indiana Jones used a Mark VII bag, even though it was an anachronism.) We even found repros of the Mark VII bag on the internet.
4. We also discussed claymores (the mines, not the swords, [livejournal.com profile] ladybird97), and the fact that apparently you can cook on C4 but you better do it outside. Oh, and Bruce says Semtex is just C4 made to Communist quality control standards. He should discuss this with [livejournal.com profile] shimmerydeath, who is a fan of Semtex.
5. The department seems to be split today into the red and white team, and the green and blue team. I'm the only girl on the green and blue team. When I walked in I heard "Oh, Sarah saved us!" "From what?" I asked. "From this!" they said, and did a superhero pose in their red and white clothing that I, thankfully, didn't match at all. Our inadvertently matching outfits are a running joke around here.

Methinks it's going to be a long day. But hey, since there aren't classes, the faculty parking in front of the library was wide open.

Oh dear, someone please keep me away from the cute puppies on Petfinder.com.

Is it normal for every single listing to say the pet would do well in a home without small children? Around here they sure do. I remain sceptical of modern pet rescue and shelter culture just like I'm sceptical of obsessive stressing over the raising of kids, but as I have neither kids nor pets, I grant you I don't have all the info.

1. What possessed someone to name a hamster Jezabelle?

2. Some of the guinea pigs are put up on petfinder while they're still "not ready for adoption yet." Cute, yes, but why tell us about poor little Arwen when you're not ready to find her a home yet? I suppose this helps them find homes, but it's a tease!

3. What possessed someone to name a guinea pig Arwen, anyway?

This leads me to ask pet name questions:
1. What's the oddest name you've given to a pet?
2. Ever given a pet a geeky or fantastical name?
3. How geeky is too geeky, for a pet name?
4. What about foreign or hard to say/spell names? What if the vet's office can't spell it?

I'll answer them later; my Q&A shift just started.

So it's a good thing that people are coming up to check on Karla, I guess.

But this is the 2nd person to come ringing the bell in this hour.

And I know Mrs Aurbakken will be here for a while if she's started talking. I would have lied and said K was up in the afternoon but has gone for another nap, but Lara was leaving when Mrs A rang, and Lara said Karla was up.

And as it was, Lara had been clanking around in the kitchen for the previous five minutes, doing God knows what, while I was watching TV and finishing my salad and trying to ignore her.

I mean, for GOD'S SAKE, I've made sure K is well stocked with the kinds of foods she can stand to eat, and I'm leaving her be so she can rest, and she has her voice back.
