Oooh, a new word!
Dec. 5th, 2007 12:41 pmYesterday in a meeting I learned the word 'microaggression' from our Director of Diversity and Inclusion, who is putting up a web page with a chart of examples of microaggressions.
My spellchecker doesn't recognize it, but The Boston Globe does!
Awesome. A lot of work still to do, but I really like that word.
A lot of the things on our DODI's chart are the classic smaller-but-obnoxious stuff people say, like attempting to compliment a black person by saying he or she is 'articulate.' (I'm pretty sure I've more or less done that.) One of the examples in the article is people fussing in the halls cuz their dorm-mates are eating ethnic dishes (behind closed doors mind you) that they think 'smell.' Don't diss my cabbage rolls, is all I gotta say.
I'll try to find such a chart, or link to hers once it's live, because it's really interesting. (And luckily I haven't done _most_ of them....)
