I'm watching the DVD of Sunday in the Park With George.
The first half was pretty wacky. I like some of the parallels between the music and the art, but that makes the music less engaging than the usual Sondheim.
Now I'm watching the second half, and "Putting It Together" is really the first song that has really drawn me in. Also, there's a marvelous little bit of meta-funny in the casting of George's technician, Dennis.
What's scary is that this is from 1986. I had heard a long time ago that Brent Spiner did a good job as Franz, but he's also Dennis in this production, very much "the geek" in the second half. It doesn't have to be casted that way-- they split up the parts in a variety of ways when producing this. He wasn't a geek icon yet when he was cast as Dennis when the production started in 1984. This just HURTS my BRAIN.
Bernadette Peters as an old lady also hurts my brain.
And the fact that this whole show is about a painting that made me stop and sit, and stare for about 10 minutes with tears in my eyes when I saw it in person, that hurts my brain too, in a very good way.
