I'm betting that while Merriam Webster's Collegiate Dictionary, 10th ed. (1993) says formulae is an acceptable plural of formula, it lists formulas before formulae when explaining the plurals, and that's what my editor up there in Middletown will change it to if I say formulae in my review.

So: betcha a beer, rootbeer or cider he changes it from the Latin to the English when he edits it. Who's in?

I'll take some of that. Beer for me if I win.

Not because I know one way or the other, but just because I can't even conceive of someone preferring "formulas" to "formulae". I can't even bear to say "formulas". How wrong. Ugh.

That was my thought. But I believe there are American editors out there who eschew latinate plurals like formulae. So we'll see.
