Tell me that if I can't keep up with cleaning up after the animals I have, I do NOT need another pair of rats.

Cuz ooooooh, this sounds appealing! Do not be put off by the apparent hairlessness. The poster has absolutely incorrect predictions of what those babies will come out as: half of them will be Rex coat, and half of them will be normal coat, none will be hairless and none will be double rex because hairless is recessive, and double rex requires two rex genes! Unless these loci are more complex than that, the Punnett square does not lie!

I am too much of a biology nerd for my own good, yes, yes.

I am completely baffled by your interest in keeping rats as pets. Rats do not belong in my world. Rats do bad things to houses, wires, and pantries.

But hey, I'm baffled by miniature trains, too. Everyone has their own thing.

Rats are friendly and have pointy snuffly noses! And they're not stupid like hamsters. [end rant of sad rat-allergic person who is stuck with hamsters]

ALLERGIES? THAT'S what's keeping you from having more rats? That is a sad sad thing, and you have my condolences. Note to self: toss more of my pictures of my rats up on flickr.

PS: Ianto _got_ the exercise ball, but didn't really like rolling around out in the open. he's now prattling around in the corral around the cage, while Jack merrily runs on the wheel inside.

Aww shit, except i think he's trying to chew his way out.

Yep -- I developed asthma about twelve years ago, and discovered that rats were a big trigger for me. (I think it's the urine -- I'd get HUGE itchy welts from the slightest claw-scrape. That and a little sneezing wouldn't have stopped me from keeping rats. Being unable to breathe, though? Sadly, yes.) I always enjoy seeing/reading about other people's rats, though. Vicarious rat ownership :).

I wonder if you'd be allergic to ASF rats? They're pretty different. But also not anywhere near as tame. One of our favorite sports is attack-the-Q-tip.

But they have whiskers! And they have they have cute little ears! And how many pets do you know who can climb upside down? And and they pose so prettily! And you can put them in your pocket! They take themselves for walks, too.

Part of the reason I want _more_ rats is because these rescues I have are an African species that is not sufficiently bred for tameness yet, because the American stock are all here as feeder animals. In Europe these guys are getting more popular. So I want a pair of Norway rats (the usual domestic species) because they're also smarter and tamer.

Dangit, he's demolishing the corral. Sneaky little bastard.

But I take such good care of mine! They have a 3 level cage and a lot of stuff to chew up and hide in and I just got them a hanging feeder!

*sigh* Fine.
