Question for you transit geeks: I want to drive to somewhere on the New Haven Line and park my car, and take the train into the city. I'll do it Friday night and come back Sunday afternoon so the car needs to be left over two nights.

What's the best trade-off of distance from NYC, free parking, ticket price, etc? I don't know the parking situation around a lot of the stations, so I'm not sure what to choose.

PS: If you're wondering what I "usually" do, I usually just throw money at either the New Haven train parking garage or the Stamford one, but I'd kinda rather not keep doing that.

The only one where I know for sure you can park for free is East Norwalk. You park on Fort Point Street by the station. If you want to do that, I can give you directions. The downside of East Norwalk is that it's a local stop.

You could also do New Haven- park in a Yale lot and walk or take the Yale shuttle to and from the train station. I've never had a shuttle driver ask for my ID.

Also, the South Norwalk parking garage is $7 a day, in case that's cheaper than Stamford or New Haven (all trains stop there.)

South Norwalk is cheaper than New Haven or Stamford, and parking _right there_ does actually appeal. I get the feeling you have to pay for parking at all the stations that aren't locals, and even some that are for all I know. Hmmmm.

That and you probably don't want to wander around in the dark looking for free street parking near the station in Stamford, Bridgeport, South Norwalk, or New Haven.

(I made a point of finding out how much the sono parking was from my mom Saturday morning. I had assumed it was much more expensive, since she always refuses point-blank to park there.)

I don't recommend parking in Bridgeport.

I think you can park overnight behind the old movie house in Stratford, near the station - but they're a local stop not a standard one.

Hmmmmmmm. Thank you for that! Yeah, I wasn't going to try to park in Bridgeport.

I've had good luck parking on-street in Pelham in the past, which is very convenient to the city and safe, but it's been years since I tried it.
